Cummins Power Releases New High-Power Diesel Generator Sets and Announces Microgrid Hybrid Technology Path

Cummins Power recently launched two new emission-compliant diesel generator sets in Chongqing, including the 1.9MW and 2.7MW high-power models. At the same event, the company also unveiled its microgrid hybrid technology roadmap, aiming to accelerate localization of large power generator sets and promote technological innovation.

By expanding the range of locally manufactured generator sets and enriching its power generation product portfolio, Cummins aims to provide greener and more environmentally friendly backup power solutions for data center users.

Next-Generation Generator Sets with Higher Power and Improved Performance

The newly released generator sets inherit Cummins’ century-long engineering expertise and excellent product quality. On this foundation, the new generation products achieve significant performance upgrades while meeting modern emission regulations.

These models belong to Cummins’ full lineup of emission-compliant generator sets, covering engine platforms including 19L, 38L, 50L, and 60L. All of these generator sets are now manufactured locally in China.

DCP 1.9MW Generator Set Powered by the Legendary QSK60 Engine

Reliable 60-Liter Power Platform

The DCP 1.9MW diesel generator set is equipped with the Cummins QSK60 engine, a legendary 60-liter displacement power platform known for its durability and high performance. Built with high-strength alloy steel components, this engine platform has delivered tens of thousands of units worldwide and has proven reliability in demanding applications.

The generator set provides a prime power output of 1.9MW, precisely matching the continuous power demands of modern data centers. It can complete the parallel operation of up to 32 generator units within 8 seconds, delivering excellent transient response that exceeds G3 performance standards.

This capability ensures seamless power protection for critical infrastructure with virtually zero power interruption.

DCP 2.7MW Containerized Diesel Generator Set

Modular, Prefabricated, and Easy to Deploy

The DCP 2.7MW containerized diesel generator set produced by Cummins Power is a fully integrated power generation system. With more than 30 years of experience serving the data center industry, Cummins has standardized its containerized power system design.

From the container structure to the intelligent control system, the entire solution is integrated into a modular platform. This design incorporates operational experience from more than a decade of large-scale data center power system management.

The generator set delivers a prime rating of 3400kVA and a standby rating of 3750kVA. Its transient response meets the G3 communication standard while complying with China Non-Road Stage III emission regulations and EPA Tier 2 standards.

The containerized design supports stable and efficient 24/7 operation, making it ideal for large-scale data center applications.

Flexible Transportation and Fast Installation

The modular containerized design allows transportation using standard six-axle or seven-axle trucks without requiring special transportation permits. The generator units can also be stacked, enabling higher power density within limited installation space.

This design allows flexible batch delivery and installation, saving time, space, and operational effort. As a result, the system is an ideal solution for deployment in hyperscale data centers.

Localized Development and Manufacturing

Designed to Meet Local Market Needs

Cummins’ localization strategy represents a complete development cycle built through more than 30 years of operations in China. From customer demand analysis and engineering decisions to intelligent manufacturing, supply chain management, and after-sales service, the entire process is completed locally.

The manufacturing facility operates under Cummins’ global “zero defect” quality management system while integrating Industry 4.0 technologies and 5G-enabled digital monitoring to ensure that every generator set meets global quality standards.

The local engineering team can independently make development decisions and rapidly respond to different data center requirements, enabling continuous product optimization and fast product iteration.

Meanwhile, a strong local supply chain ensures quick access to spare parts, supported by more than 30 service centers across China. This integrated system provides stable, efficient, and flexible power solutions tailored to modern data center infrastructure.

Future Technology Strategy for Data Center Power Systems

Microgrid Hybrid Power Solutions

As the power demand of data centers continues to increase, ensuring stable backup power supply has become a critical challenge for the industry.

Recently, NVIDIA released a white paper on 800V high-voltage direct current power supply, raising higher requirements for energy storage systems in AI data centers. These systems require energy storage solutions with different durations to provide rapid power compensation and stabilize energy consumption.

To address these challenges, Cummins Power announced its long-term technology roadmap. According to Wang Tao, Chief Engineer of Cummins China Power Systems, the company will accelerate the localization of high-power generator sets while introducing microgrid hybrid technology solutions.

This approach integrates Cummins generator sets with energy storage systems through advanced energy management control technology. The hybrid solution can provide stable and reliable electricity supply for IT equipment, improve generator reliability and durability, and reduce peak power demand in power distribution systems.

By lowering peak load requirements, data center operators can reduce equipment capacity requirements and lower initial infrastructure investment costs.
