Early Warning Signs of Engine Problems

During engine operation, operators should carefully monitor the engine for any abnormal conditions. The following symptoms may indicate potential faults and should be inspected immediately:

Difficulty starting or stopping the engine

Abnormal vibration

Insufficient engine power

Unusual noise

Increased engine oil consumption

Sudden changes in pressure or temperature

Increased fuel consumption

Excessive exhaust smoke

Fuel, lubricating oil, or coolant leakage

Correct Engine Starting Procedures

Starter Motor Protection

To avoid damage to the starter motor, do not operate the starter continuously for more than 20 seconds. Allow at least two minutes between two starting attempts.

Check Warning Indicators

Within 10 seconds after starting the engine, all warning indicator lights on the instrument panel should turn off. If any warning light remains on, inspect the system immediately or shut down the engine for safety.

Avoid Long Idle Operation

Do not allow the engine to idle for long periods. Idling for more than 10 minutes may lead to several issues, including:

Black oil leakage from the exhaust pipe

Increased fuel consumption

Lubricating oil dilution by diesel fuel

Shortened maintenance intervals

Carbon buildup inside cylinders

Failure of critical components

Sticking valves

Proper Engine Operation

Check engine oil pressure, coolant temperature, and other parameters daily using the OEM control panel to ensure normal operation. If any alarm message appears on the panel, take corrective action immediately or contact the nearest Cummins dealer.

Operators should frequently monitor panel readings. If the pressure or temperature exceeds the recommended technical specifications, shut down the engine immediately to prevent damage.

Correct Engine Shutdown Procedure

After operating the engine under full load, allow the engine to idle for 3 to 5 minutes before shutting it down. This procedure allows internal components such as pistons, cylinders, bearings, and turbochargers to cool gradually and prevents potential engine damage.

Proper Engine Maintenance

Chongqing Cummins recommends following the maintenance procedures outlined in the official operation and maintenance manual. When performing higher-level maintenance, all tasks from the previous maintenance levels should also be completed.

If the engine operates in extreme environments with temperatures below −18°C (0°F) or above 38°C (100°F), maintenance intervals should be shortened. Similarly, engines operating in dusty environments or experiencing frequent shutdowns require more frequent maintenance.

Some maintenance procedures require specialized tools or must be performed by qualified technicians. If the system includes parts or accessories not supplied by Chongqing Cummins, refer to the maintenance recommendations provided by the respective manufacturers.

Daily Maintenance Procedures (Level A)

Check crankcase breather tube for dirt, debris, or ice

Check engine oil level

Drain water from the fuel/water separator until clean fuel appears

Drain water from the remote-mounted fuel filter system (for electronically controlled engines)

Inspect the air intake system for damage or loose clamps

Inspect the drive belt and adjust tension if necessary

Check air filter restriction indicator (red/green)

Check coolant level and ensure expansion space is reserved
